Recycling Car Batteries:

An insurance write off vehicle can have the vast majority of its components in working order: It is better to re-use these components rather than throwing them away. Second best would be to recycle them for their component elements and materials; however, this requires energy, and then more energy to reconstutute them in a new product, and then even more energy to re-package it. Simply buying the reclaimed car battery is the cheapest option for you and the environment. Don’t be put off at the thought that it is not new. Think about this: Most of us buy cars second hand. All the parts will thus be ‘second hand’ to the new owner. Battery recycling is a way of reducing the amount of batteries being dumped. It can also provide a cheap solution for your battery replacement needs.

Directive 2008/12/EC of the European Parliament is aimed at minimising the negative impacts of batteries on the environment. Specifically, Commission Regulation (EU) No 493/2012 of 11 June 2012 for car batteries looks at the efficiency of recycling: “recycling efficiency” of a recycling process means the ratio obtained by dividing the mass of output fractions accounting for recycling by the mass of the waste batteries and accumulators input fraction expressed as a percentage. So if a recycler receives a redundant battery and then refurbishes it and sells it on the recycler pretty much hits a perfect score – no mass of material is lost! This ties in with Directive 2000/53/EC, in particular Article 4 section B: ”the design and production of new vehicles which take into full account and facilitate the dismantling, reuse and recovery, in particular the recycling, of end-of life vehicles, their components and materials”. In short, Used Car Parts are designed for re-use and recycling.
